Dr. Joseph Arthur and the Dawn of PSALM
By: Christian Jay P. Tardo
Dr. Joseph “Joe” Arthur was born on in July 21, 1935 in Hamilton, Ohio, USA. He is the youngest of five siblings of Lloyd Arthur Sr., and Goldie (Marcum) Arthur . Some believed that he was born with a twin sibling . His parents were devoted religious believers of The Nazarene Church. The Arthur family customarily held a family devotion time at night. As Joseph reached his teenage years, he was influenced by his friends to attend the neighbouring church of The Christian and Missionary Alliance of America (CMA) in that peaceful town of Hamilton, Ohio, USA.
The Philippine Student Alliance Lay Movement, Inc. (PSALM) started from a small beginning. It evolved out of the College Youth Center (CYC) Ministries established in 1969 in Zamboanga City. PSALM was founded by a missionary to the Philippines under the Christian and Missionary Alliance Mission. Dr. Joseph Arthur together with some Christian Filipino educators started this student ministry which later on became a movement in 1974.
From then on, PSALM branched out to the different cities such as Davao City, Cagayan de Oro, Metro Manila, Cebu, Dumaguete, Cotabato, Pagadian and the adjacent provinces. Today, PSALM has 44 full-time staff working in various campuses in 23 Districts in the Philippines.
